AMERICAN LEGION BOYS STATE
American Legion Boys State is one of The American Legion's educational programs of government instruction for high school students. The program gives participants an opportunity to become part of the operation of local, county, and state government.
During Boys State, participants learn about the rights, privileges, duties, and responsibilities of citizenship through hands-on activities. Students may participate in legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, and other educational and recreational programs.
High school juniors are selected by local American Legion Posts to attend Boys State. In many cases, expenses associated with attending are paid by the sponsoring American Legion Post, local businesses, or other community organizations.
The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a similar program for young women known as Girls State.
STANLEY JOHNSON NURSING / HEALTH SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP
The Stanley Johnson Nursing / Health Science Scholarship is awarded to a student continuing his or her higher education while pursuing a degree in nursing, medicine, or another health-science field.
Stanley Johnson came to the United States from England at age 15 and later served in the United States Armed Forces during World War I. Following his honorable discharge, Stanley and his wife, Hattie Swan Johnson, devoted many years of service to The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.
Stanley served for 52 years as Treasurer of Batavia Post 504. The scholarship was established by the Johnsons in honor of his niece, Jean Johnson, who was a British nurse.
The scholarship continues the Johnson family's commitment to encouraging future nurses, doctors, and other health-related professionals.
